Together Against Hunger
Building a once-in-a-generation home so the Ocean Shores Food Bank can expand on its mission
"That no one in our community goes hungry."
Why It Matters:
Our Community's Challenges:
From 2021 to 2024:
-
Visits to Ocean Shores Food Bank increased by 77% (compared to 60% statewide).
-
More than 400 households came to us for the first time.
-
Our food costs surged by a staggering 310%.
-
15% of Ocean Shores residents relied on the food bank—that number continues to rise.
-
Guests come from Hoquiam, Aberdeen, and Copalis Beach, reflecting broader regional needs.
As our community needs continue to grow, the current facility is holding us back.
-
We operate out of a cramped, 2,000-square-foot leased space—smaller than a full-sized tennis court.
-
The waiting area, year-round, is a drafty tent.
-
Because we are sharing a parking lot, we're limited to one four-hour full distribution per week.
-
To serve our weekly average of 225 households within that window, volunteers must move 56 households through the food bank every hour—that's about one household per minute.
-
With inadequate access to the warehouse, each item delivered to our receiving door must be touched by a volunteer no less than six times before it is available to our guests.
